To say my neighborhood is unique is an understatement. Most of the homes were built in the ‘30s by the lumbermill workers and loggers. They are simply built and compact. Many have been remodeled or need remodeling.
Many have been purchases as vacation homes and some are great starter homes for folks just starting out. And there are still some old timers here from when this neighborhood got its start.
I just walked around my block and took photos for a sampling.
I started with my house on the corner..
Sorry the lighting is bad, wrong time of the day to do this but it is what it is.
Then my the little house next door that is getting a complete makeover, it is a sweet little house and deserves this TLC! It is being redone from the foundation up.
The pile of lumber that is gold for me, I have been allowed to scrounge for any usable lumber, yee haw! I have projects up the wazoo planned for this.
This is what we have always affectionately called the Pink house, it has been pink for as long as I can remember and I have lived her since I was 8 years old…I am now on the far side of 40…
I always get a kick out of the weather vane…
A shot of the front..
I like the color of this one too, I have always called it Biscuit and the contrasting mint green door is just the right touch of color. The yard at this place needs some TLC but the house is always tip top looking.
Next is my rival gardener, her flowers and yard, a good portion of the time, outshine mine and she is 92 years old and keeps it up all herself. The tin roofs were the material of choice for these houses and it has held up FOREVER! Not always pretty but sturdy.
This neighborhood is built on a hill and none of the driveways are flat, nor the lots on which the homes are built so we have some that sit up from the road as in the Biscuit house and some are nestled down in hollows such as this one.
We are all surrounded by large pines, cedars and fir trees along with various deciduous varieties. Sometimes it makes for too much shade but they smell fabulous. The scent of cedar and pine trees is like no other.
That is a small sampling of the houses in my neighborhood. I hope you enjoyed your tour.
Neighborhood Photo Linky Party
I know, a strange title indeed. But it seemed fitting. To say this weekend was stressful is quite the understatement. My older brother was in an unbelievable car wreck on Saturday afternoon. He had a rear tire blow out on his Ford F250 truck and lost control then flew off an embankment to plummet 100 feet, taking out trees on his way down.
This is what is left of that truck..even the tow trucker drivers said it was one of the most horrendous crashes they have seen, and they see plenty…
This is the back and ladder rack.
Passenger side or I should say where the passenger side was, thankfully no one was riding with him, they would not have made it out alive. We were trying to find any of my brother’s belongings that might’ve been inside but the cab is inaccessible.
Now for the miracle part…here is where my brother was sitting..
You can see the roof comes down against and into his seat…he pulled himself halfway out before the emergency workers arrived…and got away with 8 broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a scrape on his head. He is plenty sore but will recover.
You thought the title was about the truck but it really describes my brother…he takes a beatin’ and keeps on smilin’.
Of course my cousin swears my brother is made of rubber. They have worked together in the past, my brother is a roofer, and my cousin says that he has seen him fall from a roof, bounce back up, dust himself off and climb back up the ladder to keep on working.
Yep, built Ford Tough!
Good night Big Brother, keep safe.
G’night to everyone else as well…next I will share more garden photos. The weather has warmed to near 80, so heaven in my mountain garden.
My how the summer weeks fly by! I noticed that I have only posted 3 times this month and it is already the 15th.
Though much of the country is baking in sweltering heat we barely make it to 70 degrees this past week and even the San Joaquin Valley is at least 10 degrees below average for this time of year. I was in Stockton today and it was perfect for running about. I made a fast trip as I had things I needed to do here and only ran down for a big Costco stock up trip.
I have caught up on all the custom orders for signs and I have been focusing on listing on eBay all of the saleable clutter I have been going through and trying to eliminate from this house. Much has been cleared out but I still have quite the pile on one end of our living room and I have some major reorganizing to do in the studio. I need to build myself a ladder that attaches to one wall so I can access the loft easier to store things. And along with getting that all accomplished I need to paint up signs to restock my website, I have sold quite a few the past couple of weeks so pickens are getting slim. Here is the last special order sign I had to get out this past week, it is double sided..
I wanted to also share some more of my garden flowers. My Petal Pusher roses are a favorite, the luscious pink is drool worthy and they are loaded with blooms.
This next rose was my very first David Austin English rose, Graham Thomas, I had spotted it at Home Depot in the bare root bin for $2 about 5 years ago, before that I did not know how the English Roses would fare in our mountain climate but it thrived. I was sold on English Roses from then on.
This is another English Rose. This is Tess D’Ubervilles. This particular one is a start from a cane. I inadvertently covered a cane that had fallen over with compost as I was amending the soil, and a new rose sprouted from it. This one has not gotten very big yet but it sure wants to bloom.
I had a rose also start from a cane I had cut off my Sharifa Asma English rose, tossed on the ground and covered with some compost in the Fall. I have to say that is what comes from soil that has been composted yearly, it is so rich that things just root on their own!
My Crazy Daisys are beginning to open, one is super frilly.
Day before yesterday..
Today
My regular Daisies are beginning to show their happy faces as well.
One of my Clematis is blooming, this one is called Warsaw Nike. It bloomed the very first year I had planted it. Then it was accidentally yanked from the ground by a “helpful” husband who did not distinguish it from the weeds he was pulling. I quickly replanted it and hoped for the best, and sure enough here it is blooming away again!
The moral of the story is, if you want to get a clematis that performs well above the call of duty invest in Warsaw Nike. I got mine online on eBay. The gal is great and usually has a great selection, her eBay handle is birdsongfarm*wi
My Asiatic Lilies are just starting to pop adding a touch of orange to the beds.
The gaillardia are another tough one that comes back thicker every year.
I will do a full flower bed shot so you can see all these beauties together. Maybe in the morning, right now I am too lazy to peel my body from this mattress to do it now though it looks like the perfect light outside for great photographs…hmmm, I might get motivated enough to do it.
Until next time…
