<br />
One thing I love in my garden is a potting bench. Mine sits on my back
deck and doubles as a serving area when we entertain in the summer. We built this together a few years back and it is one of our favorite DIYs still. Click on the photo to see how we did it! <br />

There is nothing like a bbq with friends in the great outdoors. Am I right? With so many potting bench ideas there is something for everybody. Mix and match elements to create your own! <br />
<br />
This next one was built by<a href="http://designdreamsbyanne.blogspot.ca/2013/05/potting-bench-part-i.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> Anne of Design Dreams by Anne</a>. She is an amazing builder and she shares how she built hers too. I love it when there is all the building details when I find something online that makes my heart skip a beat. I may never get to building it but at least if I ever want to I have it!<br />

<a href="http://bec4-beyondthepicketfence.blogspot.com/2014/06/potting-bench-challenge.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Becky at Beyond the Picket Fence</a> has a working sink in hers. You gotta love a potting bench in bright colors and has a working sink! I also adore the potting soil drawer. This is truly a hard working potting bench but oh so fun looking.<br />

Add a little roof and a brick floor and you pretty much have a potting bench garden room. Isn't this a sweet set up from <a href="http://fishtailcottage.blogspot.com//search?q=+potting+bench" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Fishtail Cottage. </a><br />

What a great Fall day it is and I have been enjoying working in my little studio cottage while watching the deer munch apples that drop from my neighbors trees. <br /> I need to ask to pick some to make apple pie biscuits with. I don't want to go buy apples when I have a ton daily falling to the ground all around me. <br />They don't go to waste as the deer and bears are sure to snap them up before the night is out but I am sure the local critters won't mind if I use some to bake with. <br />Lately I have been in the building mode again. I made myself this sweet little rustic looking box to hold my white dishes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xJ927GbCIIw/VEqypQPW6SI/AAAAAAAANf4/-c9IjKGWscU/s1600/DIY%2Bvintage%2Bbox%2C%2BFlowerPatchFarmhouse.com%2B(2%2Bof%2B16).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xJ927GbCIIw/VEqypQPW6SI/AAAAAAAANf4/-c9IjKGWscU/s1600/DIY%2Bvintage%2Bbox%2C%2BFlowerPatchFarmhouse.com%2B(2%2Bof%2B16).jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love white dishes so I keep these out on my counter but needed to save space (we are always needing more counter space) so the idea for this box came to mind. <br />I have built wood <a href="http://backwoodscottage.blogspot.com/2011/03/turning-pallet-into-garden.html" target="_blank">toolboxes</a> in the past..and I still use them. The only difference with this one is no need for handles. <br />After taking the photo above I decided to have some fun with it and did a fun Fall vignette with it.<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ShkIkgIHCXQ/VEq01xZtmXI/AAAAAAAANgA/Pp_Mkw9HYQw/s1600/DIY%2Bvintage%2Bbox%2C%2BFlowerPatchFarmhouse.com%2B%2816%2Bof%2B16%29.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ShkIkgIHCXQ/VEq01xZtmXI/AAAAAAAANgA/Pp_Mkw9HYQw/s1600/DIY%2Bvintage%2Bbox%2C%2BFlowerPatchFarmhouse.com%2B(16%2Bof%2B16).jpg" /></a><br />I love the subtle colors of the hydrangeas with the little white pumpkins.<br /><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IPY6EIJkrd0/VEq1IddlDUI/AAAAAAAANgI/HsGlzcNgcOA/s1600/DIY%2Bvintage%2Bbox%2C%2BFlowerPatchFarmhouse.com%2B(17%2Bof%2B16)-001.jpg" />I have found many other trugs and toolboxes online for more added inspiration.<br />I just love this gorgeous color of this one<a href="http://vibekedesign.blogspot.it/" target="_blank"> </a></div>

One day ran into another and zip…<br>it is Thursday!<br>I have been attempting to get several custom orders done and ready to ship.<br>My favorite this week is this custom growth chart.<br>I am loving how it turned out. <p><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/diy-custom-growth-chart-with-wings/a-diy-growth-chart-with-planes-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com-2/"><img alt="A DIY Growth Chart with planes, FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/A-DIY-Growth-Chart-with-planes-FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com_1.jpg" width="447" height="1100"></a> <p>I started with a 1 x 6 pine board and stained it with MinWax Dark Oak stain then let it dry thoroughly. <br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/diy-custom-growth-chart-with-wings/diy-growth-chart-1-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com/"><img alt="DIY Growth Chart 1, FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/DIY-Growth-Chart-1-FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com_.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>I started with adding marks for the lines at the feet increments with a ruler and Sharpie.<br>I should’ve used my triangle to make sure my lines were straight but I could not find it in my messy cabinet.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/diy-custom-growth-chart-with-wings/diy-growth-chart-2-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com-com-2-of-13/"><img alt="DIY Growth Chart 2, FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com .com (2 of sure the lines were of equal length.<br>For the numbers I used a stencil I got at Hobby Lobby a year or so ago.<br>If you don’t have a stencil you can also print them out and use graphite paper then fill in like I <a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/how-i-do-hand-lettering-for-my-signs/">shared here</a><br><a marks.<br>Then at 6 inches I make a slightly longer than the inch but shorter than the foot mark. <br><a comes the fun!<br>Adding the airplanes.<br>I based in the general shape with white so the colors would pop.<br>Notice the little mark under the propeller that is a faux pas. <br>That is easy to fix, take a q-tip dipped in alcohol and rub it right out, alcohol removes acrylic paint.<br><a design.<br>I had copied the design on the babies crib set and decor.<br><a your inkjet or laser printer the name you need to paint on!<br>Here is the video where I show you how to paint lettering. <p>Here I am about to transfer the lettering to the board then I fill in with black paint.<br>I typically print the wording in “outline” mode to save on ink but this time I missed that step.<br><a needed, in the future.<br>I am working on more painting videos.<br>I am thinking a better or more complete one of how to paint the hydrangeas is in order.<br>I have a new microphone for my camera on order so I hope that will help in better audio on the next videos.<br>Okay, enough chatter from me.<br>Happy Painting! <p><a align="center">A couple years ago I did a post on my <a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/buckets-of-flowers/">old buckets planter</a>.<a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/buckets-of-flowers/"><br></a>Nothing fancy but it has always been a favorite of mine.<br>I loved turning these old buckets into a feast for the eyes.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/old-buckets-a-wine-barrel/old-buckets-to-beautiful-planter-www-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com/"><img alt="Old Buckets to Beautiful Planter have planted them with violas for pretty spring but frost proof loveliness..<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/old-buckets-a-wine-barrel/old-buckets-and-violas-www-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com/"><img alt="Old Buckets and Violas www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Old-Buckets-and-Violas-www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com_.jpg" width="654" height="800"></a>then when things heated up and the violas drooped I traded them out for some petunias…<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/old-buckets-a-wine-barrel/old-buckets-and-petunias-www-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com/"><img alt="Old Buckets and Petunias www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Old-Buckets-and-Petunias-www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com_.jpg" width="530" height="800"></a><br>Sometimes I added in other things like lobelia and sweet potato vine..<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/old-buckets-a-wine-barrel/vintage-buckets-flower-tower-www-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com/"><img alt="Vintage Buckets Flower Tower www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Vintage-Buckets-Flower-Tower-www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com_.jpg" width="622" height="800"></a>Because of the drought I have consolidated some of my planters,….<br>less to water.<br>So I moved my smaller buckets to a half wine barrel on my back deck and filled them again with petunias<br>(some were already coming up from seed in the barrel),<br>lobelia and a sweet potato vine I had over wintered.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/old-buckets-a-wine-barrel/old-buckets-in-a-wine-barrel-www-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com/"><img alt="Old Buckets in a Wine Barrel www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com" if you look real close you can see some lobelia, though I do think the vigorous petunias may completely overshadow it soon.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/old-buckets-a-wine-barrel/dsc_0047/"><img alt="DSC_0047" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/DSC_0047.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>I am always on the look out for old galvanized buckets and tubs, I can’t seem to get enough.<br>This sits on my back deck in full view of my kitchen window and the sliding glass doors of the dining area. <br>I never tire of this view and when it cools down again, too cool for petunia and lobelia it will again be festooned with violas.<br>Now to find some old wash tubs, you know the square shaped ones that had a stand.<br>I did find new ones, you can even get a clothes wringer to go with it.<br>Probably not a bad idea if we had some kind of disaster where we had no electricity, at least we could have clean clothes.<br>Other than working in the garden I have been painting away…I will share what I have been painting next time.<br>Ta ta…Until next time.<br><a DIY Greenhouses You Can Make!<p>I have loved gardening since I can’t remember when.<br>A greenhouse is a great help to all us gardeners and a DIY greenhouse is very doable.<br>You don’t need to invest a lot of $$$ to enjoy the benefits. <br>With the help of <a href="http://www.hometalk.com/">Hometalk</a> sharers I created a <a href="http://www.hometalk.com/b/2065696/diy-greenhouse">clipboard of DIY greenhouses</a>.<br><a href="http://www.hometalk.com/b/2065696/diy-greenhouse"><img alt="hometalk curated board of greenhouses" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/flowerpatchfarmhouse2407.jpg" width="560" height="1020"></a>I found 18 different greenhouses built from reclaimed or inexpensive materials. <br>There is a range of sizes and designs.<br>I have a pricier kit greenhouse and I do love it but the spot it is sitting gets no sun in the winter, at all. <br>But I still utilize it as best I can.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/diy-greenhouses-i-found-on-hometalk/greenhouse-8/"><img alt="greenhouse 8" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/greenhouse-8.jpg" width="800" height="600"></a>I start seeds and cuttings for new plants.<br>It is always a thrill for me to see new growth and life from a tiny seed or a slip from another plant.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/tons-of-free-plants-propagate-from-cuttings/"><img alt="free plants from cuttings" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/FreePlantsFromCuttings.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>This summer I wanted to be able to extend my garden season into much later in the year and even try to grow greens and cool weather crops into the winter.<br>So I came up with this idea.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/extend-your-garden-season-with-a-diy-greenhouse/"><img alt="DIY Easy greenhouse" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/DIY-Hog-Panel-Greenhouse-FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com_-669x1024.jpg" width="669" height="1024"></a>With this one I can cover it with the clear plastic come cooler temps but in the summer when I want my garden plants to get the full rays of the sun I can just remove the cover.<br>I can build up raised beds if I feel the need or not.<br>And I hope that next Spring I can get a jump start on all my veggies!<br>I will be sure to report back on any progress or failures of this experimental hoop/greenhouse. <p><a Garden Beauty<p>It has been awhile since I shared my garden and not just an individual type of flower. <br>Life gets ahead of me sometimes. <br>I meant to write yesterday, I had a lot to say…<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/i-love-july/firefighter-rose-8/"><img alt="A fragrant red rose named to honor valiant people who serve" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/firefighter-rose-8.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>(<em>Firefighter Rose</em>)<br>I wanted to tell you I will be around more…<br>I should be able to share more photos of the garden. <a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/i-love-july/dream-weaver-8/"><img alt="A climbing rose planted next to my studio/craft cottage" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/dream-weaver-8.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>(<em>Dream Weaver planted next to my <a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/build-your-own-crafting-cottage-or-garden-shed/">Studio/Crafting Cottage</a></em>)<br>All this rampant gorgeousness deserves an audience.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/i-love-july/queen-elizabeth-8/"><img alt="Queen Elizabeth Rose, a hardy soul." src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Queen-Elizabeth-8.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>(<em>Queen Elizabeth Rose</em>)<br>I will be able to share more because I will have more time each morning to dawdle in the garden…<br>enjoying the fresh blooms, discovering what may have reseeded in a secret spot.<br>I get to visit with my garden friends who spent the night, perched upon a petal.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/i-love-july/coneflower-bumblebee800/"><img alt="Bumblebee on a Purple Coneflower" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/coneflower-bumblebee800.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>(<em>Purple Coneflower & friend</em>)<br>You see, because of health issues, I have been forced to quit my regular job.<br>Nothing too serious, but it is cause for enough concern that my husband and I decided a change was in order.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/i-love-july/comte-de-chambord/"><img alt="Comte de Chambord" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Comte-de-Chambord.jpg" a fence covered with these! <p>Now the decision to quit was not made lightly….<br>in fact the loss of that income is a matter of concern.<br>But now I must practice what I preach…<br>not long ago I posted this inspirational quote.<br>It bears repeating….<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/i-love-july/let-your-faith-be-bigger-than-your-fears/"><img alt="Let Your Faith Be Bigger Than Your Fears" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Let-Your-Faith-Be-Bigger-Than-Your-Fears.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>and are words to live by.<br>So, instead of rushing off the clean a bunch of vacation homes and condos, I will work in my studio, garden and get things done around this house that really need catching up.<br>I will list more signs on my website, paint more for the gallery and take a break now and again throughout my day to enjoy the beautiful gifts surrounding us that make me smile.<br>Like…<br><a to the Echinacea or Coneflower<p><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/echinacea-a-grand-garden-flower-and-butterfly-magnet/echinacea-or-coneflower-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com/"><img alt="Purple Coneflower or Echinacea, Butterflies love this one" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Echinacea-or-Coneflower-FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com_-712x1024.jpg" width="712" height="1024"></a>Hello...welcome back to the latest flower lovin' post!<br>Today is dedicated to the Echinacea or Coneflower. <br>Echinacea is a native North American genus with about 10 species. They are plants of the prairie and open woods. <br>Echinacea purpurea is by far the most popular. A popular name for them is Purple Coneflower but actually they come in many colors now.<br>Here are some that I personally have in my garden<br>Katie Saul (<a href="http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=d206">one of the Big Sky Series, also known as Summer Sky</a>)<br>The delicate shades of pink have a tinge of yellow filtering towards the petal tip.<br>This one is a hybrid and does not come up from seed. <br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/echinacea-a-grand-garden-flower-and-butterfly-magnet/katie-saul-echinacea/"><img alt="katie saul echinacea" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/katie-saul-echinacea.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>Another hybrid is Tomato Soup.<br>I am not sure about this one, it seems to be faltering and only did well the very first year I had it. But I did transplant it this past Fall and it may need a chance to get a good foothold. <br>Also being it was a dry winter it may need a bit more pampering to really get a start. I had to transplant it as the <a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/ode-to-the-daisy/">Crazy Daisy</a> and <a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/black-eyed-susan-an-all-american-garden-performer/">Black Eyed Susans</a> were crowding it out.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/echinacea-a-grand-garden-flower-and-butterfly-magnet/tomato-soup-echinacea/"><img alt="tomato soup echinacea" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/tomato-soup-echinacea.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>Here is what it looked like back the first year...<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/echinacea-a-grand-garden-flower-and-butterfly-magnet/tomato-soup800/"><img alt="tomato soup800" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/tomato-soup800.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>Much nicer, don't you think? Like I said, I will give it a bit of pampering and see what happens. <br>All my others are healthy and happy. <br>I love my White Swan...it is just beginning to come into bloom. <br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/echinacea-a-grand-garden-flower-and-butterfly-magnet/white-swan-echinacea/"><img alt="white swan echinacea" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/white-swan-echinacea.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>A shorter but bright and beautiful is this Pow Wow Wild Berry, it stays about 18 inches rather than getting up to 4 feet as the others can.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/echinacea-a-grand-garden-flower-and-butterfly-magnet/pow-wow-echinacea/"><img alt="pow wow echinacea" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/pow-wow-echinacea.jpg" width="800" height="530"></a>Of course I have the typical Purple Coneflower too but it is anything but ordinary...it reseeds readily and makes a great grouping.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/echinacea-a-grand-garden-flower-and-butterfly-magnet/purple-coneflower/"><img alt="purple coneflower" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/purple-coneflower-678x1024.jpg" width="678" height="1024"></a>Butterflies love it and visit often then come Fall and Winter the birds land to peck the seeds for a hearty meal.<br>Though the Coneflower is drought tolerant it performs best with decent watering. <br>They can tolerate some shade but do best with at least 5 hours of sunlight a day.<br>These here are in a rocky area and do fine but they have a soaker hose at their feet so they get plenty of water without being boggy.<br>Don't over fertilize, they will get leggy and topple over. I don't really add anything but a bit of compost to mine.<br>I do plan on adding more colors, there is a collection out now I wish to try called <a href="http://parkseed.com/echinacea-cheyenne-spirit/p/51231-PK-P1/">Cheyenne Spirit</a> with shades of orange, red and yellow. <br>I will let you know how that goes. <p>I wish you a grand day of gardening! <p><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/a-fabulous-monday-and-an-inspirational-quote/signaturepamela_thumb-png-29/"><img alt="signaturePamela_thumb.png" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/signaturePamela_thumb5.png" width="174" height="99"></a></p> Pamelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01265115493099658730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6306307526297459395.post-7329652042436922422014-07-19T08:15:00.001-07:002014-07-19T08:15:22.226-07:00DIY Quick and Easy Greenhouse with Hog Panels<p><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/extend-your-garden-season-with-a-diy-greenhouse/diy-hog-panel-greenhouse-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com/"><img alt="DIY Hog Panel Greenhouse FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/DIY-Hog-Panel-Greenhouse-FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com_-669x1024.jpg" width="669" height="1024"></a>I have missed being here to yak with you all.<br>Seems my schedule has become quite action packed which leaves me too exhausted at night to put my thoughts into the written word.<br>But today I get to be home and what a delight that is.<br>I am a homebody by nature and there is no place I would rather be on most days.<br>I want to share something I have tried to get done since early Spring. <br>My garden season starts much later than most and takes awhile to get going.<br>I wanted something to help me get an earlier start and extend my season well into the winter.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/extend-your-garden-season-with-a-diy-greenhouse/hoop-house-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com-2-of-30/"><img alt="DIY Greenhouse from Hog Panels" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Hoop-House-FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com-2-of-30-700x464.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>Though this is by no means a glamor shot I wanted to show you an overall picture of my DIY Greenhouse. (don't tell my hubby I am flaunting a photo of his backside to the world, he doesn't read my blog and is clueless)<br>Each one of the hog panels is 5 feet wide so this makeshift greenhouse is 15 feet long. If you didn't manage to do the math that is 3 hog panels connected. <br>They are 16 feet long and wedged between a frame in the ground. The height is enough for me to walk under without stooping and I am 5' 5" tall, my hubby has to bend his head and he is 6'. <br>If you want it to be taller you would, of course, space the frame a bit narrower.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/extend-your-garden-season-with-a-diy-greenhouse/hoop-house-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com-4-of-30/"><img alt="DIY Greenhouse from Hog Panels" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Hoop-House-FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com-4-of-30-700x464.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>I have straw all around my plants to reduce the need for water. <br>After we propped the panels in place my hubby wired them together.<br>Nothing fancy, just a piece of heavy duty wire twisted around it.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/extend-your-garden-season-with-a-diy-greenhouse/hoop-house-flowerpatchfarmhouse-com-9-of-30/"><img alt="DIY Greenhouse from Hog Panels" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Hoop-House-FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com-9-of-30-700x463.jpg" width="700" height="463"></a>I took several photos at different angles to try and give you the most perspective. <br>You can see my tomato plants in this one. are a drought tolerant flower, something we need right now being that California is in a drought. <br>In any garden if they get too much water they have a tendency to get gangly and flop over.<br>If you want a step by step of dividing them then click here. <a href="http://gardenerscott.wordpress.com/2011/09/10/how-to-propagate-shasta-daisies/"> HOW TO PROPAGATE SHASTA DAISY</a></p> <p>The only additional info I would add is I don't always wait until Fall to dig up and divide. <br>If I need to move one, even in the height of Summer, I just do it. <br>I do sacrifice some blooms but if I want something to go in that particular spot or if that plant is looking shabby then I do it any ol' time.<br> I do be sure and keep the transplants well watered so they can survive the shock and have a chance to set down some good roots. <p>Happy Gardening and try some Daisies today!<br><a Great Way to Use Up Zucchini<h3>Zucchini Noodles or Pasta</h3> <p><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/zucchini-noodles-or-pasta/zucchini-noodles12/"><img alt="Veggie Noodles, a low calorie href="http://www.repeatcrafterme.com/2014/04/creamy-crock-pot-chicken-and-zucchini.html">this post by Repeat Crafter Me</a> about using a spiral cutter to make a lower calorie noodle out of zucchini.<br>I was intrigued, the dish looked very tasty.<br>Being on a weight loss regime myself I thought to give a spiral slicer a try.<br>She used a different brand than I did but I am sure hers would work just as well.<br>I chose the Paderno Tri-Blade Vegetable slicer to have more options. <p>This is what the Paderno looks like set up and ready to slice.<br>(the other type blades for different shapes and sizes are stored handily underneath)<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/zucchini-noodles-or-pasta/zucchini-pasta-veggie-noodles-1-of-4/"><img alt="veggie noodles them and eat them too.<br>I blanch the veggie noodles in boiling salted water for 2 minutes and drain.<br>(To add a bit more flavor I have also blanched them in chicken broth.)<br>Now add whatever sauce you wish.<br>Tonight I had chicken sauteed in my home made oven roasted marinara (from my summer garden last year).<br><a <a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/how-to-paint-sunflowers-simple-and-fun/painting-sunflowers-banner-jpg/"><img alt="painting-sunflowers-banner.jpg" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/painting-sunflowers-banner-532x700.jpg" height="700" width="532" /></a><br />Woo Hoo!<br />I have shipped the 98 signs I have been slaving over the past couple of weeks.<br />What a task! <br />I am so excited I just had to tell everyone.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div align="center">
Now on with the show.<br />I had posted this step by step back in October.<br />I am reusing it now as I have a video to accompany it.<br />Finally!<br />Videos seem to really help me see how to do the steps so I figured it is the same for many others learning something new.<br />That being said, here goes.<br />First you can draw a circle or oval shape if it helps.<br />Many times I just start pouncing the double loaded scruffy brush around in a circle shape.<br />I use a dark brown and a black in the demo but if you look at actual sunflowers they come in a range of colors.<br />So go with the colors of what you are painting.<br />It helps me to find photos to mimic them.<br />I am using bottled craft acrylics here.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-an-even-easier-sunflower-one-stroke-at-a-time/sunflower-1-jpg/"><img alt="sunflower 1" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/sunflower-1.jpg" height="464" width="700" /></a><br />Keep the brush in one position, not twisting and turning so you can see a definite form taking shape with the two colors.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-an-even-easier-sunflower-one-stroke-at-a-time/sunflower-3-jpg/"><img alt="paint sunflowers in acrylic" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/sunflower-3.jpg" height="464" width="700" /></a><br />You can get an idea of what you should see but the video gives you a better visual idea.<br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/EsBOj84XmV0?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div align="center">
Next you need to double load a flat brush (size of brush depends on the size of your sunflower, in this demo I used a #12 flat brush) with a yellow ochre or a darker gold color and a medium yellow.<br />Stroke the petals on.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-an-even-easier-sunflower-one-stroke-at-a-time/sunflower-4-jpg/"><img alt="paint sunflower strokes" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/sunflower-4.jpg" height="464" width="700" /></a><br />Line up the chisel edge to your center, press, drag and let spring to a point as you turn the brush to the side.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-an-even-easier-sunflower-one-stroke-at-a-time/sunflower-5-jpg/"><img alt="bright sunflower painting" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/sunflower-5.jpg" height="464" width="700" /></a><br />I will again link to the video below so you can watch after viewing all the photos.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-an-even-easier-sunflower-one-stroke-at-a-time/sunflower-6-jpg/"><img alt="how to paint a sunflower" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/sunflower-6.jpg" height="464" width="700" /></a><br />Keep going around the center until you have petals all the way around.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-an-even-easier-sunflower-one-stroke-at-a-time/sunflower-7-jpg/"><img alt="fast and easy stroke sunflowers" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/sunflower-7.jpg" height="464" width="700" /></a><br />You can do another layer of petals if you wish, that is shown in the video, these photos only show a single layer.<br />You will need to clean up the center,<br />just double load your scruffy again and tap over the base of the petals.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-an-even-easier-sunflower-one-stroke-at-a-time/sunflower-8-jpg/"><img alt="sunflower-8.jpg" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/sunflower-8.jpg" height="378" width="700" /></a><br />And voila'! You have a sunflower.<br />I also show how to do the half sunflower in the video.<br />Not that you couldn't have figured that out by yourself.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/how-to-paint-sunflowers-simple-and-fun/sunflowerbud700-png/"><img alt="sunflowerbud700.png" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/sunflowerbud700.png" height="479" width="700" /></a><br />Go ahead and watch the video and I also demonstrate painting the leaves.<br />I kind of got off camera when painting the smaller leaves but they are basically the same as a petal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div align="center">
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTPbP1oElzI"><img alt="lilacs tutorial" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/lilacs-tutorial1.jpg" height="374" width="700" /></a>Well, are you ready for a new fast and easy painting tutorial???<br />Complete with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTPbP1oElzI">VIDEO</a>! <br /> Last time I shared with you how to paint the roses on the sign...<br /><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZki4KCs5TI"><img alt="rosesandlilacsbanner" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rosesandlilacsbanner.jpg" height="374" width="700" /></a>it has a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZki4KCs5TI">video</a> also.</div>
<div align="center">
Now I demo the lilacs.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/how-to-paint-lilacs/lilac-tutorial-1-of-9/"><img alt="painting lilacs" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/lilac-tutorial-1-of-9.jpg" height="464" width="700" /></a>I use a scruffy brush and start with pouncing on a conical shape in a darker color,<br />in this case Dioxinine Purple.<br />(a pattern packet with the entire design for the sign shown at the top of this post will be available soon)<br />As you can see, it is very dark.<br />Next you take your filbert brush or a small flat brush,<br />load with paint (you can double load or single, up to you)<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/how-to-paint-lilacs/lilac-tutorial-5-of-9/"><img alt="lilac tutorial (5 of 9)" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/lilac-tutorial-5-of-9.jpg" height="464" width="700" /></a>and stroke on the petals. <br />Press, drag and lift to a point to make a simple little 4 or 5 petal flower.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/how-to-paint-lilacs/lilac-tutorial-6-of-9/"><img alt="lilac tutorial (6 of 9)" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/lilac-tutorial-6-of-9.jpg" height="464" width="700" /></a>Just keep layering them on leaving some darker space showing.<br />Some flowers can be a mere 2 or 3 strokes to emulate a partial bud.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/how-to-paint-lilacs/lilac-tutorial-8-of-9/"><img alt="lilac tutorial (8 of 9)" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/lilac-tutorial-8-of-9.jpg" height="464" width="700" /></a>Add in a lighter color and stroke over some of the first flowers.<br />Fill in with flowers all the way to the tip.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/how-to-paint-lilacs/lilac-tutorial-9-of-9/"><img alt="lilac tutorial (9 of 9)" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/lilac-tutorial-9-of-9.jpg" height="464" width="700" /></a>Add the dots with a liner brush for the flower centers, and some little twiggy strokes.<br />You can get a better feel for it from the<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTPbP1oElzI"> video</a>.<br /> It is actually two videos made into one.<br />The first one I painted with a filbert brush and the second was with a #4 flat brush.</div>
<div align="center">
And just for fun,<br />here is an example of a sign painted with a different color of lilacs.<br /><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/paint-pink-roses/"><img alt="Paint Pink Roses" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Paint-Pink-Roses.jpg" height="463" width="700" /></a>Ignore the banner across the bottom,<br />this is the thumbnail for the rose painting tutorial.</div>
<div align="center">
I think next time I need to do a lesson on leaves.<br />What do you think?<br />I will share that as soon as possible..</div>
<div align="center">

soon.<br>With that post I will also include a link to a pattern packet.<br>Complete with a list of paint colors and brushes used. <p>The rest of this post is photo intensive.<br>I am going to show you stroke by stroke of how I paint my roses.<br>The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZki4KCs5TI">video</a> is great because I do 3 roses in a row and it displays how each is a little different. <p>Lets get started...<br>first double load your brush with your two colors,<br>stroke an upside down U.<br>I do this in 3 steps<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rosedemo1/"><img alt="rosedemo1" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rosedemo1.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>I wiggle my brush as I stroke to get some movement in the petal.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rose2/"><img alt="rose2" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rose2.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>See the bit of wave in the petal?<br>Now do two scallop C strokes and bring them down to a point...more or less<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rose4/"><img alt="rose4" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rose4.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>I did the outline of the design on my board with the graphite much darker than I normally would so you could see it in the photos.<br>Typically it is so light the camera would have a hard time picking it up.<br>This is the actual design that will be in my pattern packet. <p>Now paint in the second layer of the top of the bowl of the rose,<br>same type strokes<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rose6/"><img alt="rose6" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rose6.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>Since this bowl is a little wider I don't do another layer..<br>but my <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZki4KCs5TI">video </a>does show me demonstrating a rose with a third layer in the bowl.<br>I dab in the pink on the corner of my brush to fill in the center.<br>Sometimes I add a darker value of pink here to accentuate the center of the rose.<br>Next we add the arms,<br>again these are a scalloped C stroke with tails<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rose7/"><img alt="rose7" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rose7.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>Before we finish up the bowl we put in the bottom petals..<br>scallop strokes<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rose8/"><img alt="rose8" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rose8.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>That was the center and now a bit to the sides<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rose9/"><img alt="rose9" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rose9.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>We are now ready to come in and finish up the bowl of the rose<br>Start the chisel edge on the side or on one of the tails of the very inner bowl and make a scalloped U stroke.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rose91/"><img alt="rose91" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rose91.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>Attaching it to the tails on the other side.<a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rose92/"><img alt="rose92" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rose92-700x464.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>The next petal is a variation of a U stroke.<br>Start your brush on the tail edge of the very back bowl and make a varied U stroke.<br>As you can see this one only came halfway across the center bowl or maybe it looks more like 3/4.<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rose93/"><img alt="rose93" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rose93.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>Now there is several ways to do this to make the roses vary so play around with it and get different looks to your roses.<br>Now the other side..<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rose94/"><img alt="rose94" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rose94.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>It overlaps to create the unfolding of the rose<br>Now add the next arms, scalloped C strokes again..<br><a href="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/paint-a-shabby-rose-in-3-minutes/rose95/"><img alt="rose95" src="http://www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rose95.jpg" width="700" height="464"></a>You do this on each side of the bowl and the tails come over the bowl somewhat.<br>This could be the finished rose or you can do a fancy stroke that I could not demonstrate in a photo.<br>For that you really need to see the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZki4KCs5TI">video</a>.<br>You can do a few chisel strokes here and there as you feel it needs.<br>And that is it.<br>I hope you whip out those brushes and paint, paint, paint.<br>Come on back, I will include a tutorial on painting the lilacs and leaves. <p>For another rose painting display I shared go <a
